Connor's first wedding

We had an incredible time of celebration last Sunday at Sean & Melissa's wedding. Each of us had a role in the day, which made it even more special. Connor was chosen to be a flower-tosser. We practiced and practiced and practiced "walking and sprinkling." I was certain he had it down. I couldn't have been more wrong!

The drama started when he decided to scream "NO" just before he was to walk down the aisle with Anna Kay, the other flower tosser. (Melissa & her Dad would follow close behind.) Once we coaxed him to the walkway, he took about 4-5 steps then dumped his entire basket on the ground. (Kudos to Chris for capturing this moment.) Then he saw a friendly face and began a conversation from the middle of the aisle which seemed like it lasted about 5 minutes. (I wanted to scream in horror!) He eventually made it down the aisle and we found our seats... WHEW -- for now.

Greg was presiding over the ceremony, and I was halfway listening and halfway trying to keep Connor entertained with the toys and snacks I stashed in his Spiderman backpack. At some point, Connor heartily agreed with something Greg said and gave an affirming and loud, "AMEN." Thankfully, Greg couldn't hear it, which meant neither could Sean or Melissa!

The last hurdle we had to pass was the song. I had to leave Connor with Heather & Jason while I sang "All Creatures." We hadn't prepped him too much on this -- it seemed minor compared to the flower-tossing duties. He did want to accompany me to the microphone, but Heather & Jason effectively restrained him. Upon finishing, I felt much relief until I glanced over at Connor and he was giving me a standing ovation. (Let me clarify -- he was the ONLY wedding guest to give me a standing ovation.) I wanted to jump over the very high railing at the Zilker Clubhouse, but I realized that might be even more of a distraction than Connor had already been. I hastily returned to my chair and within minutes, the ceremony was done.

Sean & Melissa were more than gracious and amused by Connor's antics, but Melissa's Dad gave me the most thoughtful and affirming feedback. He was very nervous and emotional and revealed that watching Connor's quirky behavior really helped ease his nerves so that he could enjoy the stroll down the aisle with Melissa. God works in mysterious ways!
